    Lead-acid batteries usually come with a disclaimer that their depth of discharge should not exceed 50%, else their lifespan might get affected adversely. Li-ion batteries are far from such issues and can handle a depth of discharge even as high as 80% without any performance or longevity problems. They also charge relatively faster than the lead-acid batteries, thus requiring minimum solar panels and a small backup generator for this purpose.

    The depth of discharge is a measure of the amount of the battery’s total capacity used before recharging. If a fourth of the battery’s capacity gets used for some work, then the depth of discharge shall be 25%.

    Lead-acid batteries, on the other hand, are incapable of handling higher charging current due to overheating problems. The charge rate also decreases as one reaches closer to full capacity.

    The charge rate is the rate at which the battery gets charged or discharged based on its capacity. Li-ion batteries enjoy a higher charge rate and thus charge very quickly. They are capable of handling higher power from the charger.

    Solar Street Lights (SSL), like the name suggests, are lights that use solar energy to illuminate outdoor areas like streets, parks, roads, and highways, etc. The SSLs do not depend on power grids for their daily requirements and are stand-alone models that run exclusively with the power of sunlight. Hence, they must be in an area with abundant sunlight and one that is free from shadows.

If around 100 watts of solar energy gets stored in a lead-acid battery, then only approximately 80-85 watts of power is available for use. Thus they are only up to 85% efficient. In a Li-ion battery, the same 100watts of power gets utilized up to over 95 watts
